Creating charts & dashboards in PushMetrics is super easy and doesn't require a lot of technical knowledge. In a few minutes, you'll have created your first visualizations and shared them with your team.

Here's how to get started:

The general flow is: 

  1. Connect to your Database 
  2. Create a Dataset
  3. Explore the dataset to create charts & dashboards 
  4. Share Charts & Dashboards with your team & schedule reports

1) Connecting to your Database

Browse to "Administration" > "Data Connections"

Create a new data source and select "SQL Databases".
Select your database type, enter your database credentials and connect.
Make sure your database is accessible to our servers.


To check that you have access to your data, go to "Data Prep" > "SQL Workbench"

Here, you should be able to see your database schema and tables and you can start analysing your data in SQL.

2) Creating a Dataset

Before you can visually explore the data in your database, you first need to define a dataset (which is datasource + a thin semantic layer).
A dataset can use a direct connection to a single database table or view OR a SQL query.
While this may sound complicated at first, the beauty of datasets is that you create a trusted, reusable datasource for users that are not familiar with SQL.

To create a dataset, go to  Data Prep > Manage Datasets.

Create a new dataset and select the DB connection, schema and the table or view name you want to use in your analysis.

This will create a dataset and make this datasource explorable in PushMetrics.

You can find all your datasets under "Data Prep" > "Manage Datasets"

You can now click "Edit" on this dataset and configure its semantic information such as verbose names, column meta information, calculated fields, metrics, caching options, etc.

You can even created calculations and new dimensions using SQL expressions:

You can alternatively create a dataset by running a query in SQL Editor and clicking on "Explore". This will create a dataset with the query as it's source automatically.

You can now go ahead and explore this dataset, create charts and dashboards:

Now that you have a first dataset created, you can go ahead and explore it in the visual data explorer. Here you can analyze your data visually and create charts.

To get there click on any dataset name. You'll find all your datasets for quick access in the side navigation in the "Explore" section:

Using this, you can create your first visualizations, save them and add them to a dashboard:

Your newly created contents will now show up in the "Browse & Share" section:

4) Sharing Your Results

Ad hoc in Slack

If you're using Slack, install our Slack app. Then save a chart or dashboard and share the link to it in any channel in Slack:

Scheduled Delivery

Use Reports to automate the delivery of any charts or dashboards via email or Slack.
Go to "Browse & Share" > "Reports" and create a new report
